DS2 was a sometimes unsuccessful step, it was nonetheless a step forward and an attempt to create something genuinely new and of itself. DS3 has become an ouroboros, a snake eating its own backside, able to conceptualise itself only through what has come before and as the souls series has leaned more and more on its combat, it becomes a lesser adventure. There is a pervasive sense that I have seen and done all this before. To a certain extent that’s the point, but I don’t think a flat, reflexive and self-referential presentation was a part of that.
